Planning project versions for your team

The Projects Timeline shows all scheduled versions in projects that the team is linked to. Furthermore, it shows epics within each project as sub-rows. The sub-rows for the epics are expandable/collapsable.

Its main function is to provide both the team and its managers a proper roadmap of all upcoming versions. It also allows managers and team leads to create and edit the versions.

Scheduling Versions

All scheduled versions for each project linked to the team appear on the Projects Timeline.  The Projects Timelines on team and program level are in sync.

Create a Version

To create a version

  1. Click a box on the timeline
    • The date for the selected box is suggested as a starting date for the version. If that is not the correct starting date for the version, it can easily be changed by editing the start date field in the dialog.
  2. Enter all the metrics for the version
    • Name
    • Description
    • Starting date, if other than suggested.
    • Release date
  3. Click Save at the bottom of the dialog, or cancel if you do not want to create the version.

Edit a Version

All versions are editable on the timeline.

  1. Click the arrow in the top right corner of the version box.  A dialog, identical to the Create Version dialog appears, with all the metrics for the version.
  2. Edit the metrics you want to change.
  3. Click Save at the bottom of the dialog, or cancel if you do not want to change anything.

Version dates can also be edited by using drag-and-drop.  Versions cannot be dragged between projects, but can be dragged and dropped on a different date, and thereby, updating the release date of the version.

Epics in a Project

All epics within every projects are shown in collapsable/expandable sub-rows below every project row.  The epics are shown on the timeline with a box on their due date.  If they do not have a due date, but they have a version, they will be shown on the release date of the version.  If the epic does not have a due date nor a version, a message will be shown below the epic's name that says "Epic has no due date.

Change Epic's Due Date

Right now, we do not offer the possibility of changing the epic's due dates on the Projects Timeline.

To change the due date

  1. Click the epic's name on the Projects Timeline.  This re-directs you to the Epic Issue View in JIRA.
  2. Edit the Due Date of the Epic
  3. Navigate back to the Projects Timeline.  The message below the name should have disappeared and a box showing on the timeline on the correct date.
