  • Approving team timesheets requires the Manage Team or Approve Timesheet permission for the team.

  • There can be only one reviewer per timesheet - multiple reviewers are not supported.

  • Viewing the contents of team timesheets requires the View Worklogs permission for the team.

  • To prevent data inaccuracies and ensure accurate reporting, users with Approve Timesheets permission cannot approve their own timesheets.

If your organization is using timesheet approvals (timesheet periods), team members must submit their timesheet for approval at the end of the timesheet approval period to a single reviewer. This reviewer is often the team lead for the team in which the employee is a member, but a reviewer can also be anyone else who has the correct permissions for that team (see above).

When a team member submits their timesheet for approval, a notification email is sent to the reviewer. The reviewer can approve timesheets in three ways:

To approve a timesheet through email notification, the reviewer needs to first log in to Jira.

  • Review and approve a team member's timesheet via the email

  • Open the Team's Approvals page and approve one or more timesheets of the team members there.

  • Open a team member's timesheet directly

You can also easily submit and review timesheets using the Tempo Mobile app.

Reviewing and Approving Timesheets via email

If you're a reviewer who receives a Timesheet Approval request email, you can review and approve the timesheet for that team member:

  1. Click the Review Timesheet button in the email. This open the sender's timesheet that they've submitted.

  2. From there, you can review the time logged for the period, then click Approve in the upper-right. To reject the timesheet, click the arrow next to Approve and select Reject from the menu.

  3. In the form that opens, click Approve Timesheet.

  4. The timesheet owner is notified of your actions via email.

If you would like to review your team members' timesheets prior to approving them, or approve or reject the timesheet, you can do so directly from the team member's timesheet.

  1. Navigate to the Approval tab in the Teams (blue star)  section, as described above.

  2. Open a team member's timesheet by clicking the ellipsis () at the far-right of their name, and then select View Timesheet.

You can quickly review and approve any team members' timesheet by clicking the down arrow next to the name at the top-left of the Timesheet and selecting a name from the drop-down list.

Viewing a Team Member's Approval Log

If you'd like to view the approval history for your team members, you can do so easily using the Approval Log. This shows you the status of the user's timesheet approvals, the reviewer's name, date and time of action, etc. The logs include a timestamp showing when the event happened. Each action in the timesheet approval process triggers a log – one when the timesheet is submitted for approval and another log when the timesheet is approved or rejected. This way, the complete approval history is visible to both the approver and team member.

Approval log

You can access the Approval Log in two ways:

  • On the Approvals tab of the Teams page, click the ellipsis () to the far right of the name of the team member whose Approval Log you would like to view.

  • In the user's timesheet: Click the down arrow on the Submit period button at the top of the user's timesheet, then click Approval Log.
