This section is a guide to help you get started with Tempo Planner

This only covers the Tempo Planner setup, and assumes you already have JIRA Projects in place. Tempo Planner also supports the use of JIRA Agile boards.

Note

If Tempo Planner is not the first Tempo product installed and Tempo Teams has already been configured, start in step 5, by creating a program.

To set up the Planner the user needs to:

  1. Configure Permission
  2. Create a Workload Scheme
  3. Create a Holiday Scheme
  4. Create and Configure Team
  5. Create Program
  6. Start Planning

Tempo Administration

Tempo Administration section is located in the JIRA Administration Console and you need to be a JIRA administrator to access it.

Tempo Permissions: When installing Tempo Planner, you will need to grant JIRA groups access to Tempo Planner.  There are 3 different Permissions for Tempo Planner; Tempo Administrator, Tempo Team Manager and Team Lead.

  • Tempo Administrator has access to all Tempo Configurations through Administrator link in the Tempo drop-down.
  • Tempo Team Manager has permission to create new Teams and configure ALL teams
  • Team Leaders for each Tempo Team have permission to manage/configure their own teams

Workload Schemes: Tempo creates one default Workload Scheme, which is based on the JIRA Work Log settings.  If you have employees working in different schedules, you can create as many Workload Schemes that you need and move users from the default scheme to the appropriate scheme. You can change what Workload Scheme is default, but all new Tempo users will be added to the default scheme. Moving users between schemes can be done in the Workload Scheme administration page, or within each Team (Working Days in Team Configuration).

Holiday Schemes: In the Holiday Scheme you configure days off due to public holidays. Employees may have different public holidays due to geographic location or religion, and therefore you can create multiple Holiday Scheme an add users to the appropriate one.  You will have to make one of your Holiday Scheme as default.  All new Tempo users are added to the default Scheme.

Team Roles: Tempo Planner comes with a set of default roles.  In the Team Role configuration, you can edit the existing roles or add new ones.  These roles do not have any effect on the permissions of the team members.

Team Field: The Team custom field is created when installing the Tempo Planner.  The custom field is locked in the Custom Field section in JIRA Administration, but in the Team Field Configuration in Tempo Administration you can change the name of the field.

Configure your Team

There are several things that need to be configured in each team in order for all calculations and features to work correctly.

Add members to your Team:  You can either add individual members or a JIRA group.  We recommend adding individual users, because it gives you more flexibility and control over each team member.

Define your Team members’ working days: Add members to the appropriate Workload and Holidays Schemes. The schemes have to be configured in Tempo Administration. These two schemes are used when calculating the team members availability.

Set Permissions for you Team: If you are only using Tempo Planner, there are 2 different permissions for each team; Browse Team Permission and Plan Time Permission.

  • Browse Team Permission: By default, all Team members have Browse Team Permission, which allows them to view the Team overview page, view Team plans and assign Issues to the Team through the Team Custom field.
  • Plan Time Permission: Permission to plan for the the Team and all Team members.

Link your Team to a JIRA Project and/or a JIRA Agile Board: You can link both JIRA Projects and JIRA Agile boards to your Team. The links are used on the Team Timeline, when allocating work. It is necessary to link at least one JIRA Project to your Team.

Create and Configure Programs

Program is for someone managing multiple teams. A Program Manager can get an overview of his teams' epics and releases. Programs depend on the Epic Issue Type (JIRA Agile).

Recommendation

It is recommended to create a program for any number of teams, even if it is just one, because the Program Planning section offers different views, e.g. version schedule, iteration schedule and epic planning, that are not available in Team Planning.
