Build Your First Custom Chart

Easily create comprehensive charts, graphs, & reports for your Jira Dashboards or Confluence pages.

Adding a Custom Chart to a Jira Dashboard

  1. On the Jira Dashboard screen, select Edit.

  2. Click Add gadget and type Custom Charts in the search

  3. Select the first gadget from the list, Custom Charts

  4. Go to the newly added gadget, and edit the Source field to choose which issues are included in the chart

  5. Navigate to the Chart By dropdown and choose a Jira field, Custom JQL, Saved Filter, or Date to break that data down further

  6. In the bottom right-hand corner of the gadget or macro, click Save

To customize your charts even further, go to Customize Your Chart.

Adding a Custom Chart to a Confluence Page

  1. While editing a page, click +Ë… in the editor and type Custom Charts in the search

  2. Select the first macro from the list, Custom Charts

  3. Edit the newly added macro, then edit the Source field to choose which issues are included in the chart

  4. Navigate to the Chart By dropdown and choose a Jira field, Custom JQL, Saved Filter, or Date to break that data down further

  5. In the bottom right-hand corner of the gadget or macro, click Insert

Customize Your Chart

1. Source (required)

The Source tells Custom Charts the Jira issues to display on your chart.

The options are:

  1. Jira projects - pulls in issues from the selected Jira project(s)

  2. Saved filters - can select a saved Jira filter and the data pulled in will meet the JQL criteria of that filter

  3. Custom JQL - write a custom JQL statement and the chart will display issues that meet that criteria

  4. Simple Search - allows users to dynamically filter their charts once a Simple Search gadget/macro is created. As a note, if you Simple Search to a Dashboard or Page first, all Custom Charts and Issue List gadgets/macros added after will automatically connect to it.

  5. NEW Structure (in Data Center only, coming soon for Cloud) - allows users to pull in issues from a specific Structure

2. Chart By (required)

The Chart By dropdown tells Custom Charts how to segment the Jira data on your chart. For example, if you choose a Pie Chart, the Chart By indicates the slices of the Pie Chart.

The options are:

  1. Custom JQL - segment the chart by writing a JQL statement directly in the gadget/macro

  2. Saved filter - segment the chart by selecting an existing Jira filter

  3. Dates - segment the chart by dates

  4. Fields - Choose any custom field, system field, or field that comes from another app

3. Group By (required for 2D charts)

The Group By dropdown is only visible on 2-dimensional charts. It tells Custom Charts how to horizontally segment the Jira data on your chart. For example, if you choose a 2D Stacked Bar Chart, the Chart By indicates the segments of the vertical bars on the chart.

The options are:

  1. Custom JQL - segment the chart by writing a JQL statement directly in the gadget/macro

  2. Saved filter - segment the chart by selecting an existing Jira filter

  3. Fields - Choose any custom field, system field, or field that comes from another app

4. Calculate dropdown (required)

The Calculate dropdown tells Custom Charts how to measure the Jira data on your chart. The default is issue count, meaning the total of each segment of the chart will be the number of Jira issues that meet the Source, Chart By, and/or Group By selection.

The options are:

  1. Count - measures the Jira data by a count of issues or projects

  2. Sum - measures the Jira data by a total amount of a system date/number field; a custom date/number field, a date/number field from other Jira apps in your instance; any Service Level Agreements (SLAs); time issues have spent in each status (1D charts only)

  3. Average - measures the Jira data by taking the average of: 2 custom date/number fields; 2 system date/number fields; 2 fields from other Jira apps in your instance; any Service Level Agreements (SLAs); time issues have spent in each status (1D charts only)

5. Chart title

The Chart Title text box allows you to add a title to your chart. The title appears by default at the top of your chart, but can be positioned differently.

Both text and emojis are supported.

6. Chart type

The Chart Type determines how the Source data, Chart By data, and/or Group By data are visually represented on the Dashboard. You can change the chart type at any time.

The options are:

  1. Pie Chart (Default)

  2. Bar Chart

  3. 2D Grouped Bar Chart

  4. 2D Stacked Bar Chart

  5. Line Chart

  6. 2D Line Chart

  7. Funnel Chart

  8. Table Chart

  9. 2D Table Chart

  10. Tile Chart

7. Live Preview

The Live Preview gives chart creators the ability to see a preview of the chart before saving the gadget/macro. Most edits made to the chart can be seen here.

8. Chart settings

Use the Chart Settings to customize the look and feel of your charts. Here, you can adjust number and date formats, x and y-axis details, and more (learn more here).

9. Save / Insert button

  • Jira: The Save button will save the chart and any changes to the Dashboard.

  • Confluence: The Insert button will save the chart and any changes to the Confluence page.
