How is the progress of the scope of a Folio calculated

Answer

The progress of a Folio is the most important figure in Tempo Budgets as it is used to calculate all projected future costs and projected completion dates of a Folio. To understand better how the progress is calculated you can view the example from below. The example is based on the default configuration of a Folio. A full list of configuration examples and calculation methods can be read in this article here.

Within the scope of the example Folio are 5 Jira issues included:

 

To calculate the progress of the Folio we will need to determine the completion ratio of each issue. With the completion ratio we can finally determine the "earned original estimate" of each issue.

The completion ratio of each issue is computed by: logged hrs/(logged hrs + remaining estimate).

E.g. the completion ration of "SUPPORT-25" is computed by 24h / (24h + 16h) = 0.6. Now with the completion ration we can compute the "earned original estimate" which is the portion of the original estimate of the issue. So for issue "SUPPORT-25" we have earned 0.6 x 40h = 24h. When we repeat this procedure for all issues within the scope we will get an earned original estimate of 56.4h for all issues. All 5 issues within the scope have a total of original estimate of 188h.

That makes a total completion ratio of: 56.4h / 188h = 30%.

Conclusion

From the examples we can draw some conclusions that you need to be aware of in order to get reliable figures in your Folios.

  1. The progress can never be more than 100% even if you spent far more hours on an issue than you estimated. Underestimated issues are therefore not reflected in the scope progress of a Folio but certainly are when you compare your planned costs against your actual costs.

  2. You can never "earn" or achieve any progress on issues that do not have an original estimate. If you can´t set an original estimate on your issues you might want to look into other Folio configurations settings.

  3. Make sure you update your remaining estimates regularly. Issues where you log more time against as estimated that have a remaining estimate of 0 hours are considered as completed (progress = 100%) even if you're still working on the issue.

  4. With the basic configuration set of Tempo Budgets the status of your issues does not matter.

  5. Worklogs outside the of the timeframe of your Folio are not considered.
